The Verdant Blades are a successor Chapter of the Ultramarines, founded to bring order to the fractured frontiers of the Imperium. Known for their disciplined adherence to the Codex Astartes and their role in the rediscovery of the Thezan System, the Verdant Blades have carved out a reputation as relentless reclaimers of lost Imperial worlds.
Their armour is a deep military green, symbolising renewal and rebirth, while the bone-coloured left pauldron serves as a constant reminder of the fallen—both their own brothers and the countless Imperial citizens lost during the long wars of the galaxy.
Though the Verdant Blades follow the teachings of Roboute Guilliman closely, their history has shaped them into a Chapter that believes redemption can be earned through service… even by those who have fallen short of their duty.
Origins of the Chapter
The exact founding of the Verdant Blades is lost within the labyrinthine archives of the Imperium, but most records place their creation during one of the later Ultima Foundings.
Like many Chapters created during this era, they were formed to stabilise distant regions of Imperial space where warp storms, xenos incursions, and internal rebellion had severed systems from the Imperium’s reach.
The Verdant Blades were deployed to the edge of the Thezan Subsector, a region believed to have been lost during centuries of warp instability. Imperial astropathic records suggested that several systems in the region had once been compliant worlds of the Imperium, but no contact had been maintained for generations.
Where others might have written the region off as lost, the Verdant Blades were ordered to investigate.
The Rediscovery of the Thezan System
The Verdant Blades’ greatest achievement—and the moment that defined their Chapter—was the rediscovery and reintegration of the Thezan System.
Upon entering the region, the Chapter found a cluster of worlds that had survived centuries of isolation. Some had fallen into barbarism. Others had become fractured city-states locked in endless conflict. A few had fallen to heresy or xenos influence.
The Verdant Blades began a decades-long campaign of reconquest and reunification.
Planet by planet, they fought to bring the system back into Imperial compliance. Ork raiders were driven from asteroid strongholds. Cult uprisings were crushed within the depths of hive cities. Rogue planetary governors who had grown used to independence were forced back into Imperial authority.
The campaign was brutal and costly, but ultimately successful.
When it ended, the Thezan System once again stood as a loyal region of the Imperium.
In recognition of their achievement, the Verdant Blades established their primary fortress-monastery in orbit within the system they had reclaimed.
From there, they would watch over the worlds they had restored.
Chapter Doctrine
The Verdant Blades adhere closely to the teachings of the Codex Astartes, maintaining the traditional ten-company structure common among Ultramarines successor Chapters.
However, their long campaigns in isolated frontier systems have shaped their strategic philosophy.
Where many Chapters specialise in rapid strike warfare or planetary assaults, the Verdant Blades focus on reclamation warfare.

Culture and Beliefs
The culture of the Verdant Blades reflects both Ultramarine discipline and the hard lessons learned during their campaigns in the Thezan region.
They believe strongly in accountability and service. Every warrior is expected to uphold the ideals of the Chapter, and failure is taken seriously.
Yet unlike some Chapters, the Verdant Blades do not always believe failure must end in death or exile.
They believe redemption can be earned.
This belief gave rise to one of the most controversial traditions within the Chapter.
The Watchborne
Hidden within the structure of the Verdant Blades is a formation known as the Watchborne.
The Watchborne are warriors who have failed in their duty—those who disobeyed orders, made catastrophic tactical errors, or committed acts that brought dishonour upon the Chapter.
Rather than execute or exile these warriors, the Verdant Blades bind them to service.
Members of the Watchborne wear ceremonial chains across their armour, marking them as warriors who carry the burden of their failure. Their heraldry is often stripped or obscured, and they are deployed in the most dangerous missions the Chapter undertakes.
Boarding actions. Tunnel warfare. Last stands against overwhelming enemies.
To serve among the Watchborne is both punishment and opportunity.
For some, it is a path to redemption.
For others, it is simply where they will die.
The Master of Chains
Command of the Watchborne falls to a figure known as the Master of Chains.
The Master of Chains is both commander and warden, responsible for maintaining discipline among the Chapter’s most volatile warriors.
The current Master of Chains was once a respected captain within the Chapter, but a disastrous campaign cost the lives of many brothers. Stripped of rank, he was assigned to the Watchborne.
Over time, he rose to command them.
Now he leads the Chapter’s penitent warriors into battle, armed with the same wargear used by the Deathwatch Watch Masters of the Ordo Xenos.
Where other commanders lead from honour, the Master of Chains leads from burden.
Organisation
Like most Codex-adherent Chapters, the Verdant Blades are organised into ten companies, each consisting of roughly one hundred Space Marines.
These include:

The Watchborne do not formally belong to this structure. Instead, they exist alongside it as a separate force, called upon when the Chapter faces threats too dangerous—or too costly—for conventional deployments.
Legacy
Across the Thezan System and beyond, the Verdant Blades are known as relentless reclaimers of lost territory.
They are the warriors who arrive when worlds have been abandoned by hope.
Where they walk, order follows.
Where they fall, the Imperium remembers.
And in the shadows behind their banners, the sound of chains reminds all who hear it that even the Emperor’s angels are not beyond judgment.
